Health & Wellbeing
Our programs in Health & Wellbeing...
nurture our members’ well-being and develop their capacity to set and reach personal goals, make meaningful contributions to their community, and build strong foundations for healthy futures.
We provide nutritious meals to our youth each evening during the academic year and breakfast and lunch during the summer months to ensure that all youth have the fuel that they need to fully engage in programming. Each day we serve meals to nearly 400 of our members, totaling more than 150,000 meals served annually. In addition to meal service, we work to teach our members how to choose healthy foods when they are not at their Club and to make the connection between eating well and feeling well.
Alongside healthy meals and nutrition education, we provide our members with productive, safe, and fun opportunities for physical activity. We develop our members’ capacity for teamwork and collaboration through team sports and group gym activities while increasing their daily physical activity to support their overall well-being.
Our Youth Resource Navigators conduct more than
700 individual and group mental health support sessions during the academic year to support our members’ mental health and well-being.
More than half of our Club members report participating in 60 minutes of physical activity per day, compared to just 24% of youth nationally.
In 2021, it became clear that...
the long-term impacts of isolation and remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic would go far beyond academic learning; during the pandemic, many young people missed out on more than a year of critical social development and emotional growth. As such, we began providing intentional interventions to support our members’ holistic development as they recover from individual and collective challenges. As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting youth’s well-being, we introduced strategic and comprehensive social-emotional learning and mental health initiatives throughout all of our programming areas.
We provide targeted social-emotional programs while embedding social-emotional development strategies into all of our programming. Key programs include 1:1 meetings and group sessions with our Youth Resource Navigators, drop-in emotional support hours, yoga and mindfulness sessions, gardening, pre-teen Anti-Bullying and Conflict Resolution working groups, and weekly “Thoughtful Tuesdays” programming with our teen members. Across all of these programs, we work to elevate youth’s voices and ensure that session offerings are fun, productive, and relevant.
