The Boys & Girls Club, Metro South, in Massachusetts, uses the containers to bring agriculture practices and appreciation for fresh foods to students and the local community. The afterschool club set up its first Freight Farms container at its Riverside location in March of 2021, and the second went live at its Brockton clubhouse in January 2022. The two containers were put in operation almost immediately once they arrived, says Derek W. Heim, CEO of the Boys and Girls Club, Metro South. Since these all-enclosed farms were deployed, he says, “we’ve grown a huge variety of crops.”
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro South serves youth between the ages of 5-18 across Southeastern Massachusetts. The organization is comprised of four location, including the Brockton Clubhouse on Warren Avenue. Volunteers can become a mentor or lead specific activities, like art, music or homework.

“We’re supposed to learn how to make a game, like how to code, and basically learn how to add textures,” said Derek Bryant who attends an after-school class at the Club. Thursday was the last class of six and when they got to show off their creations.

A recent golf fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro South raised a record $75,000. The fundraiser, which took place late August, was supported by nearly 40 sponsors.
Almost 140 golfers participated in the scramble-style tournament.
TAUNTON — Children who swim at the Boys & Girls Club pools in Taunton have a new accessory that goes way beyond fashion.
The young swimmers are now required to wear a drowning detection headband called WAVE, Boys & Girls Clubs Metro South CEO Derek Hiem said.
"It's a tool to help our lifeguards be successful," he said. "Drowning is a leading cause of death among young people that is largely preventable."
On Tuesday, June 21st, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro South (BGCMS) held its 2022 Golf Tournament in partnership with Shields Health Care Group at Pinehills Golf Club in Plymouth, MA.
The tournament is held each June in support of the organization’s mission to nurture strong minds, healthy bodies, and community spirit through youth-driven, high-impact programs in safe and fun environments.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro South, based in Taunton, raised nearly $500,000 through its 2022 Bids for Kids Gala Auction held April 8 at the Putnam Club at Gillette Stadium.
The money was raised through sponsorships, silent and live auctions, and fund-a-cause. The auction was presented by SCU Credit Union, which has committed to serving as the event’s lead sponsor through 2025, and more than 40 additional sponsors also lent their generous support.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro South has a new hydroponic “Freight Farm” outside its Brockton Clubhouse.
On Jan. 6, 2022, the organization officially opened its Freight Farms Greenery hydroponic farm, which is inside a shipping container. Produce grown in the farm will be used to support the club’s Kids Café healthy meals program.
The Freight Farm was purchased with funds from a $115,000 grant awarded by Beth Israel Lahey Health’s Community Benefits Committee in 2021.
“The wellbeing of our kids is always a top priority. They’ve been through a lot over the past year and a half. COVID has taken its toll socially, emotionally, and academically. I’m committed to using ARPA funds to ensure children receive the support they need. I am grateful to the many wonderful organizations in Taunton that care for our children and I am thrilled to be able to partner with the Boys and Girls Club, Taunton YMCA, and Girls Inc. to address some of the mental health challenges faced by our Taunton youth,” O’Connell said in a press release.
The City of Taunton has been allotted a total of $20,952,932 in federal funding as part of ARPA, although only one-half of that amount is immediately available. This funding comes with strict spending and reporting guidelines.
