“A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself.”
— Oprah Winfrey
At the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro South, mentoring is an integral part of all that we do. Mentors offer a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction – and during #NationalMentoringMonth
we are shining a spotlight on the important role that mentoring plays in the positive development of our Club members.
We pair our members with caring, consistent adults
who serve as role models for our youth and help them build confidence, communicate their ideas, and develop a positive sense of self. This type of personal growth is defined as social-emotional development, and it is arguably the key ingredient to their present and future success. Having a mentor from a young age fosters improves a child’s readiness to learn, academic performance, behavior and attitude, and overall positive personal development.
Our
Next Level Football College Prep Program is a prime example of the impact that mentorship-based program models can make a profound impact on youth. Next Level Football is a unique college preparation program, which was founded by Brockton High School alumni Macey Russell of Choate, Hall & Stewart LLC and Judge Michael Williams of the MA Dept. of Industrial Accidents. Launched in 2015, the program now serves more than 50 under-resourced youth from Brockton in grades 8 to 12 each year. Next Level Football provides academic support and mentoring to prepare student-athletes to thrive at the collegiate level, allowing them to transform the trajectories of their lives.
The mentorship-based program has been nationally recognized with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s most prestigious program award - the 2019 Gold Honor Award for Program Excellence. This award recognized Next Level Football as the number one Sports, Fitness and Recreation program run by any Boys & Girls Club in the country. In 2017, Next Level Football won second place in the same category among all “homegrown” BGCA programs nationally.
Next Level Football combines athletic training with academic and personal mentoring
to prepare participants for rigorous college academics and instilling both technical football and valuable life skills. College tours, guest speakers, and weekly supplemental academic sessions are provided to participants with the support and information they need to prepare for expectations after high school. Weekly lectures include tips on studying habits, applying for college and financial aid, resumes and interview prep, overcoming peer pressure, time management and more. The participants in the Next Level Football College Prep program are emerging leaders who serve go on to serve as mentors to others at the Club and in their community.
The majority of youth in the program will be first-generation college students. Most come from single-parent, low-income families with limited means to support them in the academic or athletic pursuits. These young men benefit not only academically and athletically, but also emotionally as they form relationships with their caring mentors – Coach Macey Russell, Coach Mike Williams, and Coach Gene Marrow – all Brockton natives who have gone on to much success and who serve as tangible examples of what hard work and dedication can accomplish. More than that, they model the importance of turning around to help the next generation through mentorship and access to opportunity.
“Coach Mike, Coach Macey, and Coach Marrow are three
successful men giving back to their community.
It’s an honor to witness that as a young man.”
- Devante Offutt, NLF alumni and Framingham
State University student-athlete
Beyond our formal group mentoring programs like Next Level Football, all of our afterschool enrichment programs utilize the principles of natural mentorship to help nurture positive youth development. Our programs in
Character & Leadership Development help our members acquire the skills and knowledge they need to make a difference in their communities and create brighter futures for themselves. Our Passport to Manhood, SMART Girls, and Buddy Chat programs all aim to engage our youth in discussions and activities with staff and peer mentors to reinforce character, leadership, and positive behavior as they make the transition from childhood to young adulthood. Across all of our programs, our caring staff provide guidance and encouragement that help kids develop a positive self-image and learn to respect their own and others’ ideas and identities.
According to the National Mentoring Partnership,
at-risk youth who have a mentor are 55% more likely to enroll in college,
81% more likely to participate in extracurricular activities,
and 90% more interested in becoming a mentor themselves.
Our members are encouraged to become role models for their younger peers and to help inspire others. High standards of conduct, personal responsibility, and commitment to others are recognized and celebrated through our
Member of the Month and
Youth of the Year programs. Each month, one member from both our pre-teen and teen cohorts are selected as a Member of the Month, an honor earned by demonstrating true leadership and outstanding character. Our annual Youth of the Year competition honors the extraordinary achievements of one Club member and the example they set for younger members at our Clubs.
“People at the Club walked into my life and made a difference.
They reminded me that I can make a difference in the lives of others.”
- Mariah Brown, 2017 Youth of the Year
Our former Youths of the Year and many of our alumni remain involved in our Clubs after graduation. They continue to support current members, sustain meaningful relationships with their peers, act as role models for younger members, and make a positive impact on their community. Many of our teen members form and lead interest groups at the Clubs, work as counselors at our summer camps, help teach in different program areas, and serve as voices of encouragement for our younger members.
Our intentional approach to mentoring provides youth with the support of caring adults who are committed to their progress and invested in their success. We embrace the power of mentoring at our Clubs to help nurture the holistic development of our members and put our youth on the path to #GreatFutures!
